Health Minister Dr. Fenton Ferguson has given a commitment that Jamaica's Sangster International Airport and other points of entry into the country will shortly receive thermal sensors to monitor arriving passengers and assist in detecting fever which is one of the symptoms of Ebola.
Norman Manley International Airport in the capital city, Kingston, received four hand-held thermal sensors for that purpose on Friday, courtesy of Errald Miller, spouse of Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller. Dr. Ferguson was on hand for the handing over of the devices at the airport and promised it will soon receive eight of the devices and that a similar number will be provided for Sangster International in Montego Bay.
Dr. Ferguson said the Ministry of Health expects to acquire approximately twenty of the devices for the country's four main points of entry, as part of the Ebola Preparedness and Response Strategy.
He also disclosed that the Ministry is in dialogue with a private company to acquire larger walk-through temperature scanners, to be installed at the airports, free of cost.
