EOJ still without funds for Local Gov't election

Amid signs that Jamaica's Local Government election will be called before the end of the year, the Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) could face some challenges in arranging the polls as the Government has still not released funds to organise the election.

The EOJ submitted a budget of $1.2 billion to the Finance Ministry.

Director of Elections Orrette Fisher told RJR News on Friday morning that he has not received any communication from the government indicating a date for the election.

"Once elections are going to be held before the end of the year, I anticipate that the Electoral Office will be put into funds very very shortly in order to prepare and be able to conduct the elections in a very efficient and timely manner," he declared.

However, he acknowledged that the EOJ will face some difficulty in organising the election as the period narrows.
