Health workers reluctant to take samples from suspected coronavirus cases

National Epidemiologist Dr. Karen Webster Kerr

A senior official in the Ministry of Health has said some health workers are reluctant to take samples from suspected coronavirus cases.

National Epidemiologist Dr. Karen Webster Kerr made the disclosure Thursday at a meeting of the Special Select Committee of Parliament appointed to oversee Jamaica's response to the coronavirus outbreak.

Dr. Webster Kerr told the committee that the Health Ministry has the capacity to manage all targeted samples that could come in, however, she said there is fear among health workers in taking the samples from persons suspected of having the virus.

"So there's very few persons who actually do it... and so that is something that we have to be addressing with continued training etc, to have persons being tested," she said.

"We understand the fear but we have to overcome the fear," she insisted.
