Police fail to identify new strategies to fight crime

Police Commissioner George Quallo

Despite a 23 per cent increase in murders in Jamaica since the start of the year, Police Commissioner George Quallo did not outline strategies to tackle the country's crime problem as was expected at Thursday morning's media briefing.

Superintendent Stephanie Lindsay, head of the Jamaica Constabulary Force's Corporate Communications Unit, told journalists that Mr. Quallo would not be sharing any crime plan.

RJR News asked Mr. Quallo whether that statement gives Jamaicans any assurance that the JCF is serious about addressing the spiralling murder figure.

"We are committed to providing periodic updates to our citizens through the media and so, we will, within the next couple of days, months, be updating you on progress made in major investigations and any other strategic moves that we that we intend to undertake," the commissioner responded.

He said 1,404 people have been killed since the start of the year.

During the same period last year, the country recorded 1137 murders.
