Transport Minister urges owners of PPVs to invest in GPS trackers

Transport Minister, Robert Montague, is calling for owners and operators of  public passenger vehicles (PPVs) to invest in global positioning system (GPS) trackers.

Addressing a Transportation Reform Proposal Consultation in Kingston on Wednesday,  Montague said the trackers make it easier to locate and recover stolen vehicles.

He disclosed that a proposal is on the table which requires all licenced PPV operators to have GPS locator fitted on their vehicle.

Montague also  called for insurance companies and banks to support the proposal.

There is also a plan to establish a geospatial map so that every operator in the public passenger transport sector can be located.

The Transport Minister noted that GPS trackers can also help clear PPV operators who are falsely accused of  wrongdoing.

Montague told the meeting that a free taxi locator and safety application for smartphones are also being looked at where Jamaicans will be able to access cab service online.
