UTech lecturer recommends more road audits

Rachelle McFarlane, Senior lecturer in the Faculty of Education and Liberal Studies at UTech

A senior lecturer at the University of Technology (UTech) is seeking to carry out further audits of the nation's roads focusing on the deficiencies in the design.

Rachelle McFarlane, Senior lecturer in the Faculty of Education and Liberal Studies at UTech, says existing road deficiencies are contributing to fatalities.

Ms McFarlane is of the view that a road safety audit should be done before, during and after a road is constructed.

She says the authorities have only been focusing on the road user and vehicle fitness when reviewing road crash prevention.

"When we think of the road, we not only think of the driving surface. We actually look at the other infrastructure such as sidewalks, the road signs, road furniture (stop signs, signal posts), different things for all road users," she suggested.

Ms McFarlane said she will be approaching the government and private sector for assistance to conduct the audits.
