Kaliese Spencer, Jamaica's Olympic and World Championship finalist, landed the country's sixth gold medal at the Commonwealth Games on Thursday, posting 54.10 seconds in the 400m hurdles.
Spencer, running in lane three, got off to a tentative start but moved into the lead by the 200 metre mark after moving past training partner Jenieve Russell to pull away for an emphatic victory.
It was Spencer’s first international gold medal in the obstacle event since taking gold at the 2006 World Junior Championships.
Russell produced a late bust in the home stretch to take the bronze in 55.64secs, behind silver medallist Eilidh Child of Scotland with 55.02secs.
Whyte
Jamaica Annsert Whyte suffered the misfortune of falling in the men’s equivalent, giong down at the top of the home straight. Cornel Fredericks of South Africa won the gold in 48.50 beating world champion Jehue Gordon of Trinidad and Tobago with 48.75. Jeffrey Gibson of the Bahamas was third in 48.78secs.
Bronze for Morgan
Earlier, Olympian Jason Morgan secured bronze in the men’s discus throw with a heave of 62.34 metres on his second attempt.
Vikas Shive Gowda of India captured the gold in 63.64m ahead of Apostolos Parellis of Cyprus 63.32m.
Chad Wright's best effort of 60.33 was only good enough for sixth.
Jamaica’s medal tally now stands at 15.
