Gymnastics Association selects new president

By Jodiann V. Gayle

The Jamaica Gymnastics Association (JAGA)  is ready to get the sport back on track with a new president, following the Sunday's long overdue annual general meeting.

The Association  hopes to get things in working order again after finally electing a new president and executive body.

Unlike last year's controversial election, President Nicole Grant-Brown said an orderly election made the difference this year.

“What happened in previous years is that the constitution was not properly followed. What we have done this year is enforced the constitution, hence not all members can vote, just the executive members who are able to vote, so we didn’t have that problem".

“We had a list of those who could vote, and it just went smoothly”, Grant-Brown stated.

Former President, Dave McNeish who was controversially elected last march, did not seek re-election.

Shin Nishida, owner of Nishida's Gymnastics, home to many of the country's elite gymnasts, has moved up the rankings as Vice President.

“I am ready to do whatever I can do for the development of gymnastics in Jamaica, which I have been doing myself, but I am really ready to help and see where we can go from here”, Nishida remarked.

Female coach, Nadeen Whyte says with the executive in place, gymnastics will get the support needed to soar.

“The AGM went well, I am very pleased with how it went. And the team that we picked (elected) is a very good team and I know this team will work to push gymnastics further and further”, Whyte said

Grant-Brown says the first order of business is to try and secure a training facility for the national team.

“First thing we are seeking to have a home for gymnastics, where coaches who want to start their own gym can also use the equipment, that is where we really want to go”, Grant-Brown expressed.
