"Mr Smooth" battling eye injury to save his career

Voice of Jamaican boxer Sakima Mullings

Two time Contender Series champion Sakima “MR Smooth” Mullings could be forced to fast track his plans for life after boxing as he battles to overcome a career-threatening eye injury. Mullings is seeking to correct a detached retina in his left eye which has been made worse by retinitis pigmentosa, a rare hereditary condition which also causes sensitivity to light.

Mullings who has not been able to even train since September last year, says while he focused on returning to the ring he is also being realistic about life after boxing even. “There are opportunities which are not being taken advantage of and being exploited. Of course I see opportunities in promotion, management, training and gyms,” said Mullings.

But even at age 36, Mullings says he remains hopeful and is still eyeing a few more years in
the ring. “Boxing is a thing where ypu have to develop a mindset where you are totally into it; as a professional boxer, I don’t allow other things to distract me. It will be difficult to walk away  under these conditions so I’m hoping to overcome this situation and continue with boxing,” he said.
